A couple of months ago, in the Plaza de la Virgen of Valencia, i was waiting for some friends to go to eat paella in the Carmen neighborhood. As always, my friends arrived late and the midday sun shone high, which forced me to shelter in the shade, the coolest place nearby was the basilica of Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados. I entered with respect in the place and after taking a walk through its rooms I ended up sitting in front of the central room where the figure of the virgin is exposed. I am not a religious person, rather I am an atheist, but I must admit that I feel sincere devotion to this virgin so established in the hearts of the people of Valencia.
You will have observed the paradox that an atheist feels such devotion to a virgin, if she is the Maredeueta “mother of God”, God must exist by philosophical logic.
This made me think of the root of such feeling and what moves many people to worship that figure.
And I found the answer looking the virgin in the eye; Love, that was the answer. The Love and devotion that emanates from the hunched figure given by the affectionate nickname of Jeperudeta (little humpback). A figure given to his people without more weapons than his warmth and affection, that hunches over to get close their people.
And it is that Valencia is a city with a lot of love, its Mediterranean makes it warm and welcoming and without being a large city like other Spanish cities like Madrid or Barcelona, which might seem like a handicap, it makes it even better. Being able to explore the city almost on foot, by bicycle or scooter and admire the beauty of the hodgepodge of Celtic, Arab, Roman, Christian civilizations, or the most futuristic buildings to give an example, and enjoy its structure based on the passage of time and the human need of prevailing against entropy for centuries makes it rich and unique, as well as its people, the real reason for a city like this.
In this city you can breathe the love for life, to enjoy every day with the people you love and the openness towards the visitor, without fear of different, how a city of mixed race should be.
That is why the Roman Empire named Valentia “quality, worthly.”
And there is nothing more worthy than love in any of its forms.
